BRIEF HISTORICAL SUMMARY:
The origin of the Dalmatian can be found in paintings from the church chronicles from the 16th to the 18th century.Dalmatians are portrayed on the altar painting "Madonna with Jesus and the angels" in the church "Gospe od Andjela 'in the village of Veli Losinj on the island of Losinj in Croatia, which dates to the years 1600-1630, and also on a fresco in Zaostrog in Dalmatia. This stems from the fact that the origin of the Dalmatian is in the eastern Mediterranean, particularly in the historic province of Dalmatia. The first description was found in Dalmatians Croatian Bishopric of Djakovo, in the minutes P.Bakice bishop from 1719, and also in the minutes A.Keczkemetyho of 1737. The dog was named after the Latin name "Canis dalmaticus" and their height is described from 4- 5 "Spithamusů" (old Croatian rate). Thomas Pennant in his work Werk "Synopsis of Quadrupeds" of 1771 describes this breed is very independent and is called the "Dalmatian", stating that comes from Dalmatia.
Thomas Bewick in 1790, describes the breed as "the Dalmatian or coach dog". The first unofficial standard compiled in 1882 by an Englishman named Vero Shaw. This standard was taken over in 1890 as the first official standard of the newly founded club in England.
